As
we already know most tsunami occur in the Pacific Ocean because
of the “ring
of fire”, a zone of very active features
in the earth’s crust. This is the most geologically
active region on earth because of the frequent earthquakes
and volcanic eruptions.
The Pacific Northwest: from Oregon to Alaska, is located
at the edge of the North American plate along the “ring of fire”.
In the area of western British Columbia, Washington and Oregon
three junctions are formed: the Juan de Fuca plate, the North America
plate
and the Pacific plate. The Explorer plate and Juan de Fuca plate
are separated by the Nootka fault. (See
tectonic plates picture)
